About the Farm
This coffee is sourced from family-owned farms organized around the Hafursa Cooperative, located in the Gedeb District of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone. This region is part of southern Ethiopia’s historic Yirgacheffe coffee-growing area, known for producing some of the most elegant and expressive washed coffees in the world.
The Hafursa Cooperative was established in 1975 and currently includes approximately 893 members. Most producers grow coffee on small plots of less than 1.5 hectares, where coffee trees are shaded and intercropped with banana and other nitrogen-fixing crops. This style of farming supports soil health, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability.
In 2002, Hafursa joined the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, an umbrella organization created to support sustainable coffee production and market access for cooperatives in the Gedeo ethnic region of Ethiopia. Today, the union includes more than two dozen affiliated cooperatives and represents over 35,000 members.
Through cooperative membership, smallholder farmers gain access to processing support, quality control, export channels, and stronger market opportunities. Choosing this lot supports a long-standing cooperative structure rooted in community, sustainability, and high-quality coffee production.
About the Bean
Hafursa Cooperative is a fully washed coffee made from indigenous Ethiopian heirloom cultivars. After harvest, ripe cherries are carefully processed, washed clean, and dried on raised beds. This method helps preserve clarity, brightness, and the delicate complexity that makes coffees from the Yirgacheffe region so distinctive.
Grown at elevations between 1,900 and 2,300 meters, this coffee develops slowly in the cool highland climate, allowing for layered sweetness and refined acidity. The result is a subtle and exploratory cup with notes of pear, hibiscus, pomegranate, brown butter, and stone fruit.
Hafursa Cooperative is elegant and expressive, offering a balance of floral lift, soft fruit sweetness, and a gently rounded finish. It is a beautiful choice for anyone who enjoys coffees with brightness, nuance, and a tea-like delicacy.
